Playgrounds must be a priority

Albert Einstein said, “Play is the highest form of research”. If Einstein believed that play was so important, then perhaps we should as well. Play was once thought to be something that kids did while adults were working. However, we now know that play is essential for mental and physical development. Play can be anywhere. All it takes is imagination. But playgrounds are the best place to play. Here are some of the benefits that come with having a playground nearby:

  • Playing in a playground daily can also help reduce the dangers associated with a sedentary lifestyle, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes.
  • Sand or water in a playground can bring a new level of sensory development. This tactile experience teaches children how to master and manipulate different materials, and it also satisfies their need to touch in order to learn.
  • It has been shown that unstructured play can reduce stress. Stress has a negative impact on academic and health success. Playgrounds are essential for building self-confidence and letting out steam.
  • Modern technology is all-consuming. There is no room for us to tell our own stories. We are constantly bombarded by images, plots and stories. Children can create their own rules, games and stories in a play area.
  • The playground is one of the few places that children from all backgrounds and races can play together. Rich or poor, everyone can access community playgrounds. They allow children to play unhindered by adults.

  • If they’re stimulated and engaged in an exciting play area, kids are less likely to display anti-social behaviours or bullying.
  • Playgrounds are a great way for families who don’t have much money to spend some time playing together in the open air. Playgrounds are highly sought-after public resources, particularly in urbanised areas. Parents can download an app to find nearby parks, read reviews and get directions.
  • Children with ADHD or hyperactivity problems need play areas. They can become calmer in class and at home when they are able to ‘let out steam’ or challenge themselves physically.
