It prolonged sitting is added as a risk factor for death
We all know that a sedentary lifestyle can affect health by increasing the risk of chronic non-communicable diseases; however, a recent study has analyzed the impact of spending too much time sitting on mortality of people and know that this may be a factor risk of death from any cause.
Study data
To know the impact of being more than three hours a day sitting on mortality data from 54 different surveys from around the world, made between 2002 and 2011 were analyzed, finding that spend a lot of time sitting (more than 3 hours per day), it is responsible for 4% of annual deaths that occur for different reasons.
That is, such as smoking, alcoholism or other risk factors, being a long time sitting also increases mortality from different causes, while eliminating this risk factor could increase life expectancy by 0.2 years.
Mortality from all causes due to being a long time sitting was higher in the countries of the Pacific, followed by Europe, East Mediterranean, the Americas and Southeast Asian countries.
It is clear that prolonged sitting increases the risk of dying from all causes regardless of the level of physical activity, because as it has been concluded before the exercise does not counteract the effects of prolonged sitting.
What can we do about it?
As shown by this study, physical inactivity may be much more relevant in our bodies and their health and reduce the time spent sitting becomes very important if we want to win years and quality of life.
To do this, we can incorporate small breaks in half the time-spent sitting and walking just two minutes every hour to break dormancy and thus reduce the risk it represents.
And, of course, everything we can do to lead a more active life, such as work standing or place a desk on a stationary bike or treadmill may be good choices to not spend more than three hours sitting are those associated with increased risk of death from different causes.
Also, do exercises while watching television or playing video games that require movement are other alternatives to reduce the hours spent sitting in a day and encourage the adoption of a lifestyle more active and less sedentary, because apparently, it can be much more harmful than we think can harm not only health but also increase the risk of death.
