Looking after yourself when you are Caring for a close relative full-time.
Caring for a close relative full-time is not an easy role to take on and it can cause a lot of anxiety, stress and even lead to depression for some Carers as they try to juggle their own needs with that of their Husband, wife, mother, father, grandparent or even a child! The most important thing to remember is that you need support, guidance, respite, and training to deal with all the various aspects of caring for someone full-time. The sheer physical exhaustion from just helping them out of bed, giving them a wash, getting them dressed, making sure they eat a healthy balanced diet, and being stimulated throughout the day with various activities is extreme. You absolutely MUST take time out for yourself, it’s NOT selfish and you are NOT a bad person because you need a break, time to breathe and reflect!
Unfortunately, it is quite common for the close relative you are Caring for to experience episodes of Challenging behaviours, they may well hit out or refuse to cooperate with you. This is when attending a comprehensive, professionally run Challenging behaviour training course run by an elite company such as Tidal Training comes into its own.
Teaching you tried and tested coping strategies, how to defuse a potentially physical conflict, how to remain calm and in control, and how important it is for you to look after yourself and be strong mentally as well as physically.
